The exhibition captures the end of a two year long journey. Actually, it all began even long before its formal beginning, lets say Owk Owk Owk humble whiskers emerged from the ocean in 2020, during the pandemic, when sea lions peacefully slept on the deserted docks of the coastal sea shores of Uruguay. Fast forward five years and F.O.C.A (Foundation for the Oceanic Endeavor of Affection) or Fundacion Oceanica de Contemplacion Amorosa comes full circle. The exhibition captures one of the three encounters I had with orphan baby sea lions at SOS, Punta Colorada in Uruguay. This is the third and last visit I did to SOS, dating February 2025. Filmed by Patricia Domingez, the video captures the un-scripted encounter and the curiosity of these two sea creatures as I attempt to bond with them from within their world. Lots of things happened that day: pooping, screaming, hugging, heat fatigue, gentle slap-pushing one of them to jump into the water for the first time as any paternal mother would do and the destruction of a suit that kisses its ultimate demise.
The exhibition is comprised by many elements, such as the F.O.C.A website, a text commissioned by Fundacion Oceanica de Contemplacion Amorosa written by Michael Marder, ten large drawings that channel and explore the motricity of a large Male-Mother sea lion and the actual suit used at these three oceanic encounters.
This work was made possible with the support of the Fundacion Botin Scholarship, Barbara MuΓ±oz , & Filipa Ramos.
