El Dorado proposed digging for gold in the state of São Pablo, Brazil. The medium was the message. While the work had a concrete objective in its scale and quest, it simultaneously questioned the thin line that separates belief and absurdity, art and reality, exploitation of natural resources and failure. The Sisyphean spirit of the enterprise underlined a quest beyond the limits of condescending both for the biennial and its visitors.
